PERSPECTIVES ON
ADDICTION
Addiction is a complex and multifaceted experience. There are many different
maps of and perspectives on addiction proposed by experts from different field +
the diverse views reflect the complexity. One’s choice of model influences and
informs how it is approached, treated, and addressed. Which ones land for you?
Has it changed along the way?
DISEASE VIEW
Addiction is seen as a chronic, relapsing brain disease characterized by
compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences. This
model often emphasizes genetic and neurological factors.
TRAUMA VIEW
This model suggests that individuals who have experienced trauma may
turn to substance use or addictive behaviors as a way to cope with the
emotional pain, distress, or memories associated with their traumatic
experiences.
BEHAVIORAL VIEW
Addiction is considered a learned behavior that develops through
repetition and reinforcement. It focuses on the automatic and habitual
nature of addictive behaviors.
