I am from rusted swing sets.

I am from the brick house at the top of the hill, isolated, comfortable,

unsuspecting.

I am from the cypress trees, strong roots weaving in and out of the ground,

standing ever steady as guardians along the creek.

I’m from family game nights, hereditary blindness, and a bottomless well of

unnamed family anger.

From Mickey and Mike. I’m from clinging to material things, unsolicited advice,

family secrets and “no one needs to know.”

From small towns and big dreams, cheap art supplies, paint splattered

clothes and a school that became a safe refuge.

I’m from the wondrous day my mother decided to stand up for herself, and

lessons we learned, walking that road away, and to, together.
