RECOMMENDED INITIATIVES
RECOMMENDED INITIATIVES
The following recommendations are proposed as opportunities for UmRio to support
its mission of promoting social justice and reducing inequality while aiding program
families and residents of Morro do Castro to become more resilient to climate change.
Families living in favelas face many challenges, including informal and often poorly built
home construction, overcrowding, unstable or informal access to electricity, lack of
sanitation including garbage removal, clean water, and adequate sewage, poor
drainage leading to standing water, flooding, and mudslides (Muggah & Sekula, 2021).
According to the World Economic Forum's 2023 Global Risks Report, 4 of the five most
significant global risks will be environmental in the next ten years (Global Risks Report,
2023). In 2016, the Stockholm Resilience Centre created the Sustainable Development
Goals “Wedding Cake” with biosphere goals as the base layer (The SDGs Wedding Cake,
2016). Specifically, they have placed SDGs 6, 13, 14, and 15, which are Clean Water and
Sanitation (6), Climate Action (13), Life Below Water (14), and Life on Land, as the base
of the ‘cake’ (2016). The Recommended Initiatives and Future Initiatives build around
creating climate change resilience and adaptation for favela residents will primarily
revolve around sustainable development goals in the first two layers which are
categorized as the Biosphere and Society.
