OPPORTUNITIES & RISK
4 Improve Environmental Benefits – Sustainability initiatives help preserve and
protect the environment in various ways, including reducing carbon emissions,
conserving water and energy, improving water quality, enhancing green areas,
and recycling and reducing waste.
5 Become a Thought Leader in Favela Sustainability – Climate change resilience
initiatives are often disconnected within favelas and the overall city. UmRio has a
chance to leverage its international contacts and local Brazilian connections to
position itself as a thought leader and expert on climate change resilience for
favela residents. This is especially possible due to their systematic analyses and
evaluations of program effectiveness, which is crucial to UmRio’s overall success.
Their metrics and reports will be critical in showing progress and empowerment
for program participants and favela residents.
6 Provide Employment Opportunities for Favela Youth – Creating a program to
help residents become resilient to climate change can provide skills and
employment opportunities for a new economy in which the youth and residents
can participate. The traditional educational system may not be enough to equip
young residents for a fast-changing world, particularly regarding opportunities or
challenges that may arise due to climate change.
7 Enhance Collaboration – Addressing sustainability challenges works best when
using a multifaceted approach. The SAP will provide UmRio with plans to build
coalitions and collaborate across sectors and industries. These collaborations
could lead to better and more comprehensive solutions for the unique
sustainability challenges faced by favelados.
Risks
1 Resource Diversion – Additional projects and increased spending may be
difficult for UmRio to pursue without a corresponding increase in donations to
support climate change resilience efforts in the long term. Additional costs might
detract from other important initiatives UmRio is already working on and create
a burden on their employees and volunteers if they require extensive extra
work. There is also a risk that any efforts could cause employees to redirect their
time and attention away from their current activities, which are focused on the 5
Pillars of UmRio.
