3 MARKS OF EXISTENCE
The Three Marks of Existence are an essential Buddhist teaching
regarding the nature of experience that rules all conditioned things.
This means that every sensation, thought, and experience we have
is subject to these three rules.
ANNICA - impermanence
Everything changes. Nothing is permanent or everlasting. What
arises will also fall. Breath, body, emotions, identities, cravings.
This is a simple concept to understand and quite excruciating in
practice.
Evolutionarily, our system is designed to experience finite
pleasure and satisfaction so that we will be propelled to keep
reaching. It's intelligent for procreation’s objective but doesn’t
leave us with a great outcome for personal and lasting
happiness. We will be full then we will be hungry again. We will
be sexually satisfied but not for long. We can get high, but we
can't, despite our best efforts, make it last.
However, a visceral understanding of this allows for us to be
more fluid in life - to embrace change (or at least allow it) rather
than resist it,
"In three words I can sum up
everything I've learned about life: It goes on."
-Robert Frost
