RECOMMENDED INITIATIVES
OVERVIEW OF RECOMMENDED INITIATIVES
The following recommendations are proposed as opportunities for Chicago Market's to support its mission
and meet the sustainability goals and priorities established for this SAP. While there are numerous additional
approaches that can further reduce Chicago Market's ecological footprint and strengthen community benefit,
these are identified as areas with the highest impact. Some of these recommendations are primarily relevant
once the store is open and operational. However, the months leading up to store opening provide an ideal
time to prepare for successful implementation.
Certification as a B Corporation (B Corp) is among the most ambitious and holistic third-party certifications
available to businesses today, and would signify Chicago Market as a leader among food cooperatives in
sustainability and community impact. Recommendations within the three focus areas, if implemented, should
easily allow Chicago Market to achieve Certified B Corp status. However, the recommendations also have
significant standalone value, and should considered whether or not B Corp is pursued.
This SAP aims to address Chicago Market's own environmental footprint, as well as create positive impact
across the entire supply chain. The recommendations in Focus Area 1 will help the Market minimize in-store
waste and resource consumption. Focus Area 2 addresses upstream supply chain factors through supplier
selection, impact measurement, and product transparency. Focus Area 3 primarily impacts downstream
sustainability with improved customer health, but also creates value for local growers and suppliers.
