OPPORTUNITIES & RISKS
OPPORTUNITIES & RISKS
Beyond the threat of climate change on the global food system, addressing sustainability (or not) within
Chicago Market will directly impact the cooperative's financial success and mission fulfillment. Integrating
sustainability actions into Chicago Market's vision and operations can provide many benefits, including cost
savings, risk mitigation, and community impact. Conversely, failing to implement, track, and communicate
sustainability practices presents an inherent risk.
The following opportunities and risks were identified as material to Chicago Market's long-term sustainability:
Opportunities
• Improved resource efficiency: Integrating SAP recommendations will allow Chicago
Market to reduce in-store energy and water use, limit food and material waste, and
lower emissions through optimized local sourcing.
• Operational cost savings: Whether in-store or supply-chain-based, sustainability
initiatives can reduce costs related to logistics, utility bills, and food waste.
• Market differentiation: With multiple national grocers nearby (e.g., Aldi, Target, Jewel
Osco), a strong sustainability plan will allow Chicago Market to stand out among the
several nearby competitors.
• Demonstrated leadership among community food cooperatives: Based on projected
revenues and stakeholder ambition, Chicago Market has the opportunity to be a leader
among co-ops in sustainability and local economic impact.
• Improved health and well-being for employees, owners, and customers: An initiative
focused on indoor air quality, healthy diets, and positive lifestyle choices can improve
the overall health of all employees and users.
