LOFOTEN IN
WINTER
Lofoten in winter can be a breathtaking sight, but also a harsh one. The winter
storms can be intense, forcing one to stay indoors. However, when the sun
emerges, the landscape quickly transforms into a magical winter wonderland.
The skiing season usually starts in February, as the snowfall before that is
typically fleeting due to the ever-changing weather conditions. Until then,
simple hikes are still possible as long as they are tailored to the weather and
terrain. Personally, I recommend Tjeldbergting in Svolvær and Heia in
Henningsvær as my top winter picks. These hikes are ideal for watching both
the sunrise and sunset, making them perfect for the brief period of daylight
during the polar night.
WHAT ARE POLAR NIGHTS?
While the sun does not set during the
summer, it does not rise between
December 7th and January 5th during the
winter. This does not mean that it is
completely dark. You will get a few hours
of brightness during the day, and if the
sky is clear, it is like a sunset that lasts for
two hours. It doesn’t get more beautiful.
