1. "Tasmin sati shvasa prashvasayoh gati vicchedah
pranayamah." (Yoga Sutra 2.49)
This sutra can be translated as: "When that is accomplished, the yogi's
movement of inhalation and exhalation should be regulated." It suggests
that once a practitioner has established steadiness and comfort in their
asana (physical posture), they should begin regulating and observing the
breath, indicating the practice of pranayama.
2. "Bahya abhyantara stambha vrittih desha kala sankhyabhih
paridrsto dirgha sukshmah." (Yoga Sutra 2.50)
This sutra can be translated as: "The regulation of exhalation and
inhalation, which follows after securing that steadiness of posture, is
external, internal, or restrained, and is also long and subtle, according to
place, time, and number." It highlights that pranayama involves controlling
and modifying the patterns of breath, such as lengthening or shortening the
duration of inhalation and exhalation, as well as retaining the breath, all
while considering factors like place, time, and count.
3. "Tatah kshiyate prakashavaranam." (Yoga Sutra 2.52)
This sutra can be translated as: "From that, the veil covering the light of
knowledge is destroyed." It suggests that through the practice of
pranayama and regulating the breath, the obstacles or veils that obscure
one's inner light and understanding can be diminished, leading to clarity
and self-realization.
