PRANAYAMA
TECHNIQUES
nadi shodhana
Nadi means nerve, and shodinah means purification. This breath is also
commonly refered too as "alternate nostril breathing" and is preformed by
alternately blocking the nostrils and passing the breath back and forth
across the central channel.
Benefits:
Carries a larger supply of oxygen to the blood than regular breathing,
soothes the nerves, helps to still the mind, lowers heart rate, and balances
the subtle energy of the body.
How to practice:
Bring the index and middle fingers to touch the center of the
forehead or third eye. You will alternately use the right thumb to
close the right nostril and the right ring finger to close the left
nostril.
To begin, inhale and then use the right thumb to close the right
nostril. Exhale gently but thoroughly through the left nostril.
Keeping the right nostril closed, inhale through the left nostril and
deep into the belly. As you inhale, allow the breath to travel
upward along the left side of the body. Pause briefly at the crown
of the head.
