SAYING YES WHEN YOU
WANT TO SAY NO
A common form of self-betrayal is saying yes when you actually want to say
no. Maybe you're afraid that the other person won't like you if you say no. Or
maybe you're afraid that they'll think you're selfish. These fears can cause you
to ignore what you want, which violates your own needs and boundaries. But
if you can't say no in your relationship, then something is off.
If you're used to always helping out, it can be difficult to break this habit.
Wanting to help and please someone isn't a problem unless it's not what you
actually want to be doing. If you keep agreeing to things you don't want to do,
then you'll always be left feeling resentful and unseen.
Self-Check-In
1.Were you allowed to say no as a child? Do you remember how your parents
would react when you said no to them? Describe how it would go.
2. How do you feel about yourself when you tell someone no? What negative
thoughts or self-judgment do you experience when saying no?
