HOW SECURE-ISH CAME TO BE
Case Study
My Own Damn Mess
Five years ago, I was in the midst of yet another attachment crisis. I’d been dating some-
one for a few months—things were going well—and then they went on a weekend trip
with friends. They didn’t text much. I spent three days alternating between composing
desperate messages, convincing myself they were cheating, and plotting my new life as
a solitary mountain hermit.
When they returned, completely oblivious to my internal meltdown, I realized how ex-
hausting my attachment pattern was. Not just for my partners, but for me. I was tired
of the emotional roller coaster. Tired of feeling unsafe in relationships. Tired of either
clinging or running.
I’d been in therapy for years. I’d read all the books. I understood my patterns intellectu-
ally. But in the heat of the moment, that understanding went out the window. I needed
something more practical. More accessible. More real.
So I started creating my own tools. My own scripts. My own exercises. I refined them
through trial and error. I shared them with friends who struggled with similar issues. I
combined what I learned in therapy with research on neuroscience, attachment theory,
and trauma. Eventually, these tools became the Secure-ish method—and now, this work-
book.
This isn’t theory from an ivory tower. This is hard-won wisdom from the trenches of
modern relationships. This is what actually works in real life, when you’re staring at
those three dots on your phone screen, fighting the urge to either send seventeen texts in
a row or block their number and move to another country.
